I am looking for a firm mattress, but I have no idea where to start or what is a good mattress?

I have back problems and I am sure he is due to my mattress, I want to get a new one, but I have no idea where to start. Also, if you get a new box spring when purchasing a new mattress, does that change the effectiveness? My husband is a tall and I drive a constantly against him during the night, is the only way to avoid this is to get the memory foam?
